RSHE
We use the Journey in Love programme to support the delivery of our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum. Since September 2021, RSHE has been a statutory requirement in all primary schools in England. Journey in Love is the recommended RSHE programme for Catholic schools and has been designed as a progressive scheme of work that complements the Religious Education, PSHE and Science curricula taught across the school.
Children develop their understanding of RSHE throughout their primary education, from Reception to Year 6. This learning takes place across a range of subjects, including Science, Computing and PSHE. Journey in Love is used to support and enrich specific aspects of this learning in an age-appropriate way.
Each week throughout their time in school, children are discovering more about themselves and the world around them. Our school is dedicated to creating a safe and stimulating environment that supports that development, and Journey in Love is an important part of that process.
At the heart of our work is our mission statement, which guides us in understanding ourselves as children of God, each special and unique. One important aspect of this is learning about our faith and how it shapes our lives. A Journey in Love is a curriculum scheme that is integrated into all levels of learning, focusing on friendship, family, community, relationships, as well as spirituality.
The content of 'A Journey in Love' is age appropriate and taught with sensitivity, taking into account the maturity level of the children. Naturally, children may have questions related to these lessons and we ensure that there are opportunities for them to ask these in a sensitive and age appropriate manner. The programme also places great emphasis on the importance of parental involvement so we encourage children to discuss their lessons at home.
We are proud of the progress our pupils are making and the values they are developing. Together with yourselves as Parents/Carers, we are creating an environment that fosters growth and supports your child's journey as they continue to learn and discover more about themselves and the world around them.
Parents/Carers are welcome to request samples of the resources we use for 'Journey in Love' should they wish to look in more detail at the content. If you have questions or wish to review the resources used in school, please email the school office stbartholomew@sthelens.org.uk marked for the attention of the RSHE Lead.
Parents have the right to request withdrawal from the non‑statutory sex education elements of the curriculum only. If you would like to discuss this, please contact the school as listed above and we will be happy to talk this through with you.
